Neuro conditions and disorders Flashcards
What is ALS?
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Degenerative disease that involves both upper and LMN’s
cranial nerves can be affected as well
What is Bell’s palsy?
an inflammatory response affecting the facial nerve (CN VII), results in paralysis of facial expressions
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
A polyneuropathy resulting in symmetric motor paralysis and progressive muscular weakness that develops quickly.
What is MS?
Multiple Sclerosis
A demyelinating disease (more prevalent in colder climates) with bouts of remission and exacerbation, or progressively worsen
What is PD?
Parkinson’s Disease
a progressive disease affecting the basal ganglia with a decrease in dopamine production/receptors in the brain
What is postpolio syndrome?
A new form of muscular dystrophy that may occur decades after the initial episode of polio.
New denervation occurs with asymmetrical muscular weakness
Neuralgia
pain occurring along the nerve
Radiculalgia
pain of the nerve roots
What’s the difference between CRPS I and CRPS II?
CRPS I tissue injury without nerve injury
CRPS II involves nerve injury
How is CRPS characterized?
burning pain (causalgia), hypersensitivity to light touch, coldness and sweating
