- excessive caffeine/alcohol intake

- not known
- musuclar and psychogenic factors are associated
- peripheral pain mechanisms likely to play role in episodic tension headaches
- central pain mechanisms play important role in chronic tension headaches.

Assessment Findings
A
- gradual onset
- bilateral in 90% of cases
- dull, vice-like, throbbing pressure around head
- may be frontal-occipital location
- pericranial tenderness
- may be intermittent or may be present all day, ranging in intensity from mild to severe
- palpable muscle tightness, soreness or stiffness in neck, upper shoulders, or scalp
- no prodrome
