Greater,lesser,and least splanchnic nerves T7–T11 (supplied abdominal viscera)
Lumbar splanchnic nerves T12–L3 (supplies pelvic viscera)
What are the centres for parasympathetic nervous system?
Brain stem (cranial outflow) (Sacral outflow)– S2-S4 of spinal cord
What are the output nerves for parasympathetic nervous system?
Cranial outflow, branches of CN 3,7,9,10
Sacral outflow – pelvic splanchnic nerves (supplies descending colon, sigmoid, rectum, bladder, penis or clitoris

Contraction of smooth muscle
Contraction of cardiac muscle by stimulating conduction system
Decreased gland secretions except for sweat glands

Relaxation of smooth muscle
Relaxation of cardiac muscle
Increased gland secretions
Where do sympathetic fibres arise from?
Thoracolumbar division
Thoracic and lumbar region of spinal cord
What’s the sympathetic trunk?
2 chains of ganglia formed one of each sides of the spinal cord
( most sympathetic ganglia lie close to the spinal cord)
Where do sympathetic pre ganglionic fibres leave the spinal cord?
Only between the 1st thoracic and 2nd lumbar segments

Pre ganglia - acetylcholine
Post ganglia - norepinephrine
