A
  • least severe type of injury
  • often caused by swelling
  • no microscopic signs of injury
  • generally gone within a few weeks

Describe axonotmesis

A
  • more severe type of injury
  • generally the perineurium and the epineurium will be gone
  • generally a compression injury
  • the area that is distal to the injury is likely to die (Wallerien degeneration)
  • regenerated but can leave a scare
  • PNS regrowth at a rate of 1-4mm every day

A
  • severance of entire nerve fibre
  • continuity of connective tissue structures will be lost
  • Most severe type
  • Wallerian degeneration will occur distally
  • In PNS, some regeneration but takes longer
  • Regeneration may form neuromas
