Neuro 6 Flashcards
1
Q
Describe neuropraxia:
A
- least severe type of injury
- often caused by swelling
- no microscopic signs of injury
- generally gone within a few weeks
2
Q
Describe axonotmesis
A
- more severe type of injury
- generally the perineurium and the epineurium will be gone
- generally a compression injury
- the area that is distal to the injury is likely to die (Wallerien degeneration)
- regenerated but can leave a scare
- PNS regrowth at a rate of 1-4mm every day
3
Q
Describe neurotmesis:
A
- severance of entire nerve fibre
- continuity of connective tissue structures will be lost
- Most severe type
- Wallerian degeneration will occur distally
- In PNS, some regeneration but takes longer
- Regeneration may form neuromas
