Q

Tolerate Compression

A

should change shape when pressure is exerted on them
deformation with normal movement
spongy quality from epineurium

Q

Slide in container

A
both inter and intraneural sliding
longitudinal and transverse sliding
sliding occurs relevant to adjacent structures
dissipates tension
provided by the mesoneurium

Q

Withstand Tension

A

multiple joint tension results in increased tension
sliding potential used up results in nerve stretching
can have 20% strain before nerve compromised
at 8% elongation, blood supply is compromised - impacts function, can cause ischaemic pain
excessive tension can inhibit axonal transport
mechanical sensitivity and disruption occurs mainly with tension

Q

What causes nerve tension?

A
Impaired sliding
- insufficient IVF opening
- excessive IVF closing
Decreased interneural sliding
- nerve may become fibrotic
Excessive tensioning
- pre-tensioning at remote sites
