Networks - Wireless Networks Flashcards
What is a WLAN?
A Local Wireless Network
How do wireless networks transmit data?
Through radio waves
What do you need to set up a wireless network?
A WAP (Wireless Access Point)
What is a WAP?
A switch that allows devices to connect wirelessly
What do devices need to be able to connect wirelessly?
They need wireless capability
What happen if a device doesn’t have wireless capability?

What are the benefits of wireless networks?
Convenient - device can automatically connect to it and you can move around while connected to it
Cheaper and better for the environment - no wires needed
Easy to add more users - no extra wires needed or complex setup
What are the disadvantages of wireless networks?
Less secure - access points available to all devices which can allow hackers to gain access
Signal strength can easily be reduced
There is a limit to how far a wireless network can reach
Lower bandwidth - less reliable
What are some ways a signal strength can be reduced?
Distance from WAP
Interference from other wireless networks
Physical obstructions (walls)
