Cyber Security - Network Protections Flashcards
What are the different ways that organisation can keep their networks secure?
Encryption
Anti-malware software
Firewalls
User access levels
Automatic software updates
MAC address filtering
What is encryption?
When data is translated into code which into someone with the correct key can access
What is encrypted text called?
Cipher text
What is unencrypted text called?
Plain text
What is encryption essential for?
Sending data over a network securely
What is anti-malware software?
Software designed to find and stop malware from damaging an organisation’s network and the devices on it
What is an example of anti-malware software?
Virus scanners
What do firewalls do?
Examine all data entering and leaving a network, identify potential threats using a set of security rules and block unwanted data
What are the different types of firewall?
Software and hardware - often both are used for extra security
What are user access levels?
They control which parts of the network different groups of user can access
What is an example of User Access Levels?
Business managers having higher access level allowing them to access more sensitive data such as pay information
Why are user access levels good?
They limit the number of people who have access to important information so help prevent attacks from within the organisation
What are automatic software updates used for?
To patch (fix) any identified security holes in a piece of software
What is bad about not using automatic software updates?
Software that is unpatched or outdated can be more easily exploited by hackers, malware and viruses
What is MAC address filtering?
A way of making sure only the people on a network are trusted users
