Networks (p 37-46) Flashcards
What is a network?
A group of two or more computing devices that are connected by a communication medium allowing them to communicate electronically
List 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of having a network
Advantages:
- Resources are shared over a network
- Better and more efficient communication
Disadvantages:
- You can be exposed to dangerous people
- Malware can spreads to other computers on a network
What is the purpose of a NIC (Network Interface Card)?
Allows a device (node) to connect to a network
What is the purpose of a Modem?
Connects a computer or network to the internet
What is the purpose of a Switch?
Connects many computers on the same wired internal network
What is the purpose of a Router/Bridge?
Connects different types of networks using one device (eg. combining wired and wireless networks or a LAN to a WAN)
Compare the following wireless media:
- Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity)
- WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)
- 4G/LTE (Long Term Evolution)
- 5G (5th Generation)
Wi-Fi:
A WLAN Connecting devices using radio signals over a short range.
WiMAX:
Long range wireless networking for mobile and fixed connections. It’s flexible and low in cost.
4G/LTE:
Wireless broadband technology designed to support roaming internet access by mobile devices.
5G:
5th generation of mobile networking technology.
Describe the structure of a star topology
Devices are connected to a centra node (switch)
List two advantages and a disadvanteges of a star topology
Advantages:
- New devices are easily added to the network
- if a connected device breaks it does not affect the rest of the network
Disadvantage:
- If the switch fails, the netire network becomes unstable
