Networks and Web Technologies Flashcards
Circuit Switching
Reserving a particular network route to transfer data between two devices
Client-Server Network
Network where a centralised server controls network traffic between client computers
CSS
Programming language that determines how components of a web page are displayed
Domain Name
Human-readable website address
Domain Name Server
Server that stores a list of IP addresses and their associated domain names
Firewall
Security measure that controls incoming and outgoing network traffic using a set of rules
HTML
Programming language that defines the content of a web page
Hub
Network device that connects multiple devices together, sending the data that it receives to all connected devices
IP Address
Unique number assigned to every computer or device connected to the Internet
LAN
Type of network that operates over a limited area such as a house or an office
Modem
Network device that converts data between digital and analogue signals
Packet
Formatted unit of data sent across networks
Packet Switching
Splitting data into packets that can be sent individually across different routes across a network
PageRank Algorithm
Algorithm that ranks web pages according to the number of other web pages that contain links to it, used by search engines
Peer-to-Peer Network
Network type in which computers are directly connected to each other, with no central servers
Protocol
Standard that defines how network devices should communicate
Proxy Server
Server that acts as an intermediary between a local computer and a larger network
Router
Network device that directs data from one network to another
Switch
Network device that connects multiple devices together, sending the data that it receives to the intended recipient device only
TCP/IP Stack
Protocol model that divides communication into four layers: Link, Internet, Transport and Application
The Internet
The global network of computers and other networks
WAN
Type of network that operates over a large geographical area, such as a continent
Wireless Access Point
Network device that connects devices wirelessly
Wireless Network Adapter
Hardware component that allows a computer to make a wireless connection to a network
