Networks Flashcards
Client-server vs peer-to-peer
Peer-to-peer networks are used to connect a small number of devices, for example in a home or office where there are just a few users. They are cheaper to set up and maintain. Client-server networks are more expensive to set up and maintain as a more powerful computer is required to act as the server, network software is needed and specialist knowledge is needed to administer the network.
LAN
A computer network within a small geographical area, such as a home, school, office building or a group of buildings on a local site.
WAN
A network that connects separate LANs over a large geographical area.
IP
A unique software address used to communicate over the Internet.
MAC (Media Access Control)
The permanent hardware number that every NIC is created with.
Failover
A procedure by which a system automatically transfers control to a duplicate system when it detects a fault or failure.
