Networks Flashcards
Network
A network is simply two or more computer systems connected to allow them to communicate and share information
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network which covers a smaller geographical area, like a school or a library
Wide Area Network (WAN).
A network which covers a larger geographical area, like a city or university campus,
Advantages of Wired
It is normally more secure
The connection speed is normally faster
Disadvantages of Wired
It can leave many wires trailing around an office
A very large amount of cabling and network hubs may be needed in large premises
Advantages of wireless
There are no wires that could be accidentally stood on or tripped over
A connection can be made anywhere (within the range of the device)
Disadvantages of wireless
If the connection is unsecured, other users could access it
There could be interference with the wireless signal from other devices
What is a client/server network
A method of organising a network where you have lots of computer systems that access different servers
If a server goes offline resources on it and unavailable
What is a peer to peer network?
More like a home network
Each machine managed separately
Different software and programs can be installed on each computer
User account remains on that computer system
