Networks Flashcards
Star
all devices are connected to a central hub or switch
Devices communicate with each other through the hub or switch, which manages the data flow.
Bus
all devices are connected to a single backbone cable. Data is transmitted along the cable, and each device receives all data but only processes data intended for it.
Ring
each device is connected to exactly two other devices, forming a circular path or ring. Data travels in one direction around the ring until it reaches its destination.
Mesh
every device is connected to every other device in the network.
Hybrid
combination of two or more different types of topologies
Star Advantages
Easy to manage because all devices are connected to a central hub,
isolation - if one device fails it doesn’t affect the rest of the network
Star disadvantages
single point of failure - If the central hub or switch fails, the entire network can be affected.
limited cable length- Distance limitations between devices and the central hub or switch due to cable length restrictions.
Bus advantages
Easy to set up and requires minimal cabling. - simple
Requires less cabling compared to other topologies. - cheaper
Bus disadvantages
Single Cable Failure: If the backbone cable fails, the entire network can be affected
Limited Scalability: Adding more devices can degrade performance due to increased collisions.
ring advantages
Fault Isolation: Easy to identify and isolate faults within the ring.
Efficient Data Transfer: Data flows in one direction, reducing the chance of collisions.
ring disadvantages
Single Cable Failure: If one device or cable fails, it can disrupt the entire network.
Limited Scalability: Adding more devices can lead to increased latency and decreased performance.
mesh advantages
Scalability: Easily scalable by adding more connections without affecting performance.
High Performance: Can support high data transfer rates due to multiple parallel connections.
mesh disadvantages
difficult to set up
more expensive
hybrid advantages
increases fault tolerance and reliability
can be scaled up
hybrid disadvantages
