Networks Flashcards
What is a computer network
A group of two or more computing devices that are connected by a communication medium allowing the computers to communicate electronically
What are the four different types of wireless media
Wi-Fi
WiMax
4G / LTE
5G
What does Wi-Fi refer to
Wireless LANs connecting computers and devices using radio signals communicating through wireless access points over a short range
What does WiMax stand for and what is it
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access
It is a technology standard for long-range wireless networking for both mobile and fixed connections
What does LTE stand for and what is it
Long Term Evolution
It is a wireless broadband technology designed to support roaming internet access by cellphones and other handheld devices
What is 5G
The 5th generation of mobile networking technology
It has improved speed over LTE
What are the two types of networks
Wired
Wireless
What is a wired network and what mediums does it use
A network that uses physical media to transfer data between two or more nodes
The transmission mediums are Unshielded Twisted Pairs and Fibre Optic Cables
What does a wireless network consist of and what mediums support it
Transmitters and Receivers
Radio Waves
Infrared
What is the physical topology of a network
The physical structure of a network in which workstations are connected to the network through the actual cables that transmit data
What is a star network
A network in which the devices are connected to a single node (The Switch)
What are the two biggest advantages of a Star network
New devices can easily be added
If any device breaks, it does not affect the rest of the network
What is the main disadvantage of a Star network
If the switch fails, the entire network becomes unusable
What does Bandwidth refer to
The amount of data that can be sent over a network in a specific amount of time
What does NIC stand for and what does it do
Network interface controller
Enables computers to connect to a network
What is the purpose of a modem
Connect a computer or network to the internet
What is the purpose of a switch
Connect many computers on the same, wired internal network and has the ability to direct network traffic to the correct port
What is the purpose of a Router
Connect different types of networks using one device
What does VOIP stand for and what is it
Voice Over Internet Protocol
It is a technology that allows phone calls or video calls to be made over the internet
What is a VPN
A virtual private network
An encrypted connection over the internet from a device to a network
What is a mesh
A type of network in which a device transmits its own data as well as serves as a relay for other devices
What is an intranet
A locked private network used to share information on a private network
What network resources are shared over an intranet
Network printers
Shared Folders
Network applications
What is an extranet
Any network that combines an intranet with the internet
What does location-based computing refer to
Several different technologies that make use of geographical position to customise a user’s experience
What are the 6 components required for location-based computing
Positioning System (GPS)
Communication network for data transfer
Service and application provider
Data and content provider
Mobile devices
