Networking: WAN Flashcards
What is WiFi?
A method of connecting to an existing network (LAN) wirelessly, by using radio waves to send and receive data.
What is Encryption?
Changing data sent between two computers into a scrambled format
What is 4G?
Allows users to view digital media on their mobile devices, including streaming video, rich multimedia apps, and high-quality music.
What is 3G?
Third generation of cellular communications technology.
What is the medium used for 3G and 4G transmission?
Radio Waves
What is a protocol?
A set of rules for data transmission over a network
Define:
- SMTP
- IMAP
- POP3
- HTTP
- FTP
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
- Internet message access protocol
- Post Office Protocol
- Hypertext Transfer Protocol
- File Transfer Protocol
What is WebDAV?
WebDAV is an extension of the HTTP protocol used for communication between client browsers and web servers.
What is a network gateway?
A network gateway is a device that connects to two or more network segments.
It is also called a protocol converter and usually operates between two different protocols
What layers does a wifi router have?
Physical layer
Datalink layer
Network layer
What are the key devices used in a WLAN?
- Wireless access point – allows devices to connect to a wired network via wireless signals
- Wireless bridge
- Wireless router
How do bounded and wireless connections compare in terms of bandwidth and speed?
Bounded connections (wired) generally offer higher speeds and more stable bandwidth, while wireless connections can be slower and affected by interference.
What are common transmission technologies in WANs?
Satellite radio waves and microwave transmission are commonly used for WAN data transmission.
Explain the function of routers
Allows the local network to access the larger network/internet
Explain the function of Wireless Access Points
Allows devices in the network wireless access to the local network
