Networking: Types of networks Flashcards
Brief description of 4 different types of networks
What are the four types of networks?
Personal Area Network (PAN)
Local Area Network (LAN)
Wide Area Network (WAN)
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
What are the distinguishing features of a PAN network?
Smallest, most basic type of network
Consists of a wireless modem, a computer or two, phones, printers, tablets etc.
Typically found in small offices or residences
Revolves around and is managed by one person in one building from a single device
What is a LAN network?
A set of computers and low-voltage devices that are connected over a small geographical area. They are one of the most common, simple and original types of network.
How does a WAN network work?
It is a collection of LAN or other networks that communicate with one another. They consist of adult computers and low-voltage devices that can communicate with each other even when miles apart.
What is a MAN network?
They are larger than LANs and smaller than WANs and incorporate elements from both types of networks. They span an entire geographic area (town or city, but sometimes a campus). They are managed by either a single person or a company (local council).
What is the world’s largest network and what type of network is it?
The internet is a WAN network.
