Q

What is transmission media?

A

Channel through which data is transferred between devices in a network, either physically (i.e. through wires) or through a wireless medium (microwaves, infrared waves, electromagnetic waves etc.)

8
Q

Describe the two types of NICs.

A

Internal NIC: Installed in the motherboard through a slot and requires a cable. The two types are PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) and ICA (Industry Standard Architecture)
External NIC: For devices without an internal NIC, this includes the wireless, which is inserted into the motherboard and the USB based.

Q

What is a hub?

A

A device that splits the network connection among multiple computers. When one device requests data from another device, the request is sent to the hub, which then transmits it to the whole network.

Q

What is a modem?

A

Short for modulator/demodulator. Allows a device, such as a router to connect to the internet by modulation (converting a digital signal into an analog signal) or demodulation (the other way around). The speed of data transmission is modifiable and is measured in bytes per second.

Q

What is a bridge?

A

It filters the content of a data packet by reading the MAC addresses of both the source and destination. It helps control data traffic and are passive devices as there is no interaction between bridged and paths of bridging.
