What is e-commerce?
E-commerce is the buying or selling of goods or services over the internet
What are the advantages of e-commerce to the customer? (2)
- Customers can compare prices of goods and get the best deal
- Customers don’t need to leave their home which is convenient
What are the advantages of e-commerce to the seller? (2)
- There is a potential worldwide market
* Directly dealing with customers eliminates the retailer or ‘middle man’ which increases profits
What are the disadvantages of e-commerce to the customer? (2)
- If you order from abroad it is difficult to return
* You rely on security of the company you are buying on
What are the disadvantages of e-commerce to the seller? (2)
- You need to employ someone to manage the website
* You need to make sure you web site is completely secure
What is Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)?
SSL is a protocol that sets up a secure channel between your computer and an HTTP server
What is ‘Information Rich’?
This is having access to the wealth of information available on the Internet, and have the skill to use the internet
What is ‘Information Poor’?
This is not having access to the wealth of information available on the Internet, and do not have the skill to use the internet
Why would a family use a network? (2)
- To search for information for school projects
* Booking holidays
What is the downside of a family using a network? (2)
- You would need good security to stop hackers
* You would need filters to stop children accessing inappropriate content
Why are networks becoming important in the community? (2)
- Voluntary agencies use the Internet to recruit and advertise
- History websites allow visitors to find out about the local history
What is tele-working?
Tele-working is when employees work at home from their computers
What are the advantages of tele-working to the employee? (2)
- You save travel time and costs
* As long as you work well you don’t need to work in a specific place so you can look after kids
What are the advantages of tele-working to the employer? (2)
- Employees often work harder at home than in the office
* You can save money on office space
What are the disadvantages of tele-working to the employee? (2)
- You may feel isolated from co workers
* You need designated work space in your home
