Networking Flashcards
Define Protocols
Network protocols are formal standards and policies comprised of rules, procedures and formats that define communication between two or more devices over a network. Network protocols govern the end-to-end processes of timely, secure and managed data or network communication.
Define TCP/IP
TCP/IP, or the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, is a suite of communication protocols used to interconnect network devices on the internet.
Define Sever
A server is a computer, a device or a program that is dedicated to managing network resources. Servers are often referred to as dedicated because they carry out hardly any other tasks apart from their server tasks.
Define Switch
A switch, in the context of networking is a high-speed device that receives incoming data packets and redirects them to their destination on a local area network (LAN).
Define Hub
A hub, also called a network hub, is a common connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are devices commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. The hub contains multiple ports. When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
Define Topology (STAR/BUS/RING)
You can think of topology as the virtual shape or structure of the network. Network topology is also referred to as ‘network architecture.’
star topology, each computer is connected to a central hub using a point-to-point connection.
Bus topology uses one main cable to which all nodes are directly connected.
ring topology, the computers in the network are connected in a circular fashion, and the data travels in one direction.
Define network
A computer network is a set of computers connected together for the purpose of sharing resources. The most common resource shared today is connection to the Internet.
Define LAN
A local-area network (LAN) is a computer network that spans a relatively small area. Most often, a LAN is confined to a single room, building or group of buildings, however, one LAN can be connected to other LANs over any distance via telephone lines and radio waves.
Define WAN
A computer network that spans a relatively large geographical area. Typically, a WAN consists of two or more local-area networks (LANs). Computers connected to a wide-area network are often connected through public networks, such as the telephone system. They can also be connected through leased lines or satellites.
