Networking Flashcards
What is Layer 1 of the OSI model
Physical layer
Describe the physical layer of the OSI model
defines physical means of sending bits from one device to another. The physical layer doesn’t change the data in any way
What is Layer 2 of the OSI model
Data link layer
Describe the data link layer of the OSI model
responsible for transferring data without errors. switch to switch or router to router communication. Converts packets into frames adding the MAC of the source and destination device.
What is layer 3 of the OSI model
Network Layer
Describe the network layer of the OSI model
Addresses packets and routes them to their address on the network. Translates between MAC and IP. Data unit associated with this layer is packets
What is layer 4 of the OSI model
Transport Layer
Describe the transport layer of the OSI model
Manages end to end message delivery. divides long packets into smaller segments & re assembles them. Ports are a transport layer technology
What is layer 5 of the OSI model
Session layer
Describe the session layer of the OSI model
Allows 2 applications on different devices to communicate. establishes session, manages it and ends it.
What is layer 6 of OSI model
Presentation Layer
Describe the presentation layer of the OSI model
Translates data to an intermediate form that masks the difference between data types i.e. word file vs. video file. compresses data to reduce bit size. May also encrypt & decrypt data
What is layer 7 of the OSI model
Application layer
Describe the application layer of the OSI model
Give applications access to network services i.e. email, FTP, databases.
