Networking 2.2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is a Router?

A
  • A hardware device designed to receive, analyze and move incoming packets to another network.
  • It may also be used to convert the packets to another network interface, drop them, and perform other actions relating to a network.

Q

What is the purpose of a Switch?

A
  • A hardware device that filters and forwards network packets, but is often not capable of much more.
  • A network switch is more advanced than a hub, but not as advanced as a router.
  • Bridging done in hardware

What is an Unmanaged Switch?

A
  • Like a plug-and-play switch
  • Fixed Config
  • No management protocols like SNMP
  • Cheap

What is a Managed Switch?

A
  • A network switch with configuration features that can be modified via a user interface
  • VLAN support
  • Traffic prioritization
  • Redundancy support
  • Port Mirroring

Q

What is a Wireless Access Point (WAP)?

A
  • A wireless receiver for connecting wirelessly to a network or the Internet.
  • Not a router
  • Extends wired network to wireless network

Q

What is a Firewall?

A
  • A software utility or hardware device that acts as a filter for data entering or leaving a network or computer.
  • You could think of a firewall as a security guard that decides who enters or exits a building.
  • A firewall works by blocking or restricting network ports.

Q

What is a Hub? What is its purpose?

A
  • Connects multiple computers or other network devices together.
  • More devices communicating makes it less efficient.

Q

What is a Cable Modem?

A
  • A hardware device that allows your computer to communicate with an Internet service provider over a landline connection.
  • Works by connecting a coaxial cable and then an ethernet cord from the modem to a computer or network router.
  • Network routers share your Internet connection between multiple computers.
  • Cable offers a significant speed increase in Internet performance compared to a dial-up connection and is one of the fastest broadband solutions.

Q

What is a DSL Modem?

A
  • Hardware device that allows your computer to communicate with an Internet service provider over a DSL connection.
  • Not as fast as most Cable broadband connections

Q

What is the purpose of a Bridge?

A
  • A device that connects two LANs
  • Bridging connects two smaller networks to create one big network.
  • Uses software to bridge networks

Q

What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

A
  • A technology that allows an Ethernet network cable to also carry electrical power.
  • To take advantage of POE, the network needs either a POE network switch or a POE injector. This switch and injector are what allow a power signal to transmit over Ethernet.

Q

What is a PoE Injector?

A
  • It makes a non-PoE compatible switch work with PoE devices by powering compliant devices over a single Ethernet cable
  • Perfect for low-power devices that need to be set up in locations where a power outlet is unavailable.

16
Q

What is a PoE switch?

A

-Switch that allows Power over Ethernet

17
Q

What is Ethernet over Power (EOP/PLC)?

A
  • Extends ethernet network using power cables.

- Example would be charging an electric car and the EOP allows it to connect to the network.

18
Q

What is a Wireless LAN controller?

A
  • Allows a centralized management of WAPs
  • Usually a proprietary system (Cisco access point requires Cisco Wireless Lan Controller)
  • Can also be cloud-based
