Castell argues we are moving from an industrial age to a digital age, this is due to advances in online
technology and new forms of communications, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. He argues that
digital communications and online networks are a basis of our society, since the internet is now the
source of consumer culture.
Castell argues that social networks have increased the emergence of hierarchies, this is because people
who don’t have social media can’t provide anything to the digital world, so they are marginalised from
society and face inequality.
