Network Resources Flashcards
LAN (LOCAL AREA NETWORK)
-Is spread over a small geographical area
-Uses cables/wireless technologies
-To provide services for a single organisation
WAN (WIDE AREA NETWORK)
-Covers a large geographical area.
-Uses fibre optic/comm satellites/undersea cable
-Provides services globally
MAN (METROPOLITAN AREA NETWORK)
-Covers a highly populated area
-Uses fibre optic/Wireless technology
-Provides a service for a community of users
NETWORK CARD
-Connects a computer to LAN
-So it can communicate with the file server
-It provides a port
-For connecting a network cable
SERVER
- A server manages shared network resources
-Such as storage/files/email etc
-It processes requests from other nodes
SWITCHED HUB
-A hardware device that acts as a single connection point for computers
-Checks the destination of data packets
-And forwards them to the intended recipient
-Using the optimum route
REPEATER
-A repeater regenerates data transmission signals
-That have been attenuated(distorted)
WAP(WIRELESS ACCESS POINT)
-A device that allows a wifi enabled device
-To connect to a network
-Usually by connecting to a router
-Wifi hotspots use a WAP to support their wifi coverage area
MEDIA CONVERTER
-Allows 2 dissimilar media types
-To connect with each other
-Changes the physical signals
-From one media type to another
-Such as fibre optic cable and copper
IP ADDRESS
-Identifies the connection address of a computer on the internet
MAC(MEDIA ACCESS CONTROL)
-Identifies the physical address of a computers Network Interference Card(NIC)
-Uniquely
-On a LAN
SERVER BASED NETWORKS
-One or more servers provide resources and security
-Multiple clients
-Request resources off the server
PEER TO PEER NETWORKS
-No dedicated server
-All computers have equal status
-Each is a supplier
-And consumer of resources
-Each computer controls how its resources are shared
(MORE SUITABLE FOR SMALL ORGS AS LESS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIRED)
