Communication Protocols Flashcards
ETHERNET
-A LAN protocol
-Referred to as the IEEE 802.3 protocol
-Defines standards for physical plugs and sockets
-Uses CSMA/CD
BLUETOOTH
-A digital communications protocol for connecting 2 devices in a peer to peer relationship
WIFI
-A digital communications protocol for connecting devices to a wireless network via radiowaves
VoIP(VOICE OVER INTERNET PROTOCOL)
-VoIP allows telephone calls
-To be made over computer networks
-Including the internet
-It converts analogue signals into digital packets
-Supports two way transmission
-Supports call recording
BANDWIDTH
-Bandwidth is a measure of the capacity of a communication channel
-It is the range of frequencies available
-Bandwidth may be a frequency range e.g 3kHz or 64kbps
BROADBAND
-Broadband is wide bandwidth data transmission
-Handling multiple signals and traffic types
-Refers to high speed, always on internet
-Used to describe a bandwidth in excess of 3kHz
METAL CABLE
-Copper wires are used to transmit electrical signals over short distances
-Shielding protects from interferance
FIBRE OPTIC
-Uses fine glass strands
-To transmit pulses of light
-At high speed over long distances
-Providing interference free, secure data transmission
