Network Operations Flashcards
List the 2 types of Network Topology
1) Physical Topology
2) Logical Topology
How does physical Network Topology work?
It works by connecting devices physically by media
How does Logical Network Topology work?
It works by the actual flows in the Network
List the types of 6 wired Network Topology
1) Bus Topology
2) Ring Topology
3) Star Topology
4) Hub and Spoke Topology
5) Full Mesh Topology
6) partial mesh topology
what is a Bus Topology (wired)?
Bus topology is a cable which runs through an area that requires network connectivity.
How does Bus Topology work?
Bus topology works by tapping into the cable that is running through the area using either a T connector or a Vampire Tap.
is Bus topology useful today?
perhaps, but its an old technology and not many agencies use it any more.
why is Bus topology not popular today
it is not popular today because all the devices that is tapping into the Network forms a single collision domain.
what is a Ring Topology (wired)?
Ring topology is a cable which runs in a circular loop
How does Ring Topology work?
Ring topology works by connecting each device to a ring, this allows that data to travel in a singular direction.
what is FDDI?
Fiber Networks.
how does FDDI WORK?
FDDI works by using two counter rotating rings for redundancy.
what is the difference between FDDI Rings and Token Rings?
FDDI Rings works by using two counter rotating rings for redundancy while Token rings wait for a turn to communicate on a ring by passing a token.
what is a Star Topology (wired)?
Star topology works by connecting a cable to a single point.
what is Star topology significance?
it is the most popular physical LAN Topology today
where do we usually find STAR topology in a network
we find it being used in Ethernet cabling, wireless and fiber as well.
Why is Star topology not common today?
it is not common used today because of it high risk of failure. for example if the central device where all he cable to connecting to that single point fails, the entire network fails.
what is a Hub and Spoke Topology (wired)?
Hub and Spoke Topology works by connecting multiple sites using different cabling connections and various central hubs connectivity.
is Hub and Spoke Topology redundant?
No. if central (hub ) fails, the whole network can fails.
what is a full Mesh Topology (wired)?
Full Mesh works by connecting each node in a cable to every other node, this makes for optimal routing .
what is the downside of full Mesh Topology?
very expensive to maintain and operate
is full Mesh Topology redundant?
yes. it has the most redundancy.
what is a Partial Mesh Topology (wired)?
a consortium of full-mesh and hub and spoke typologies which work together to provide optimal routes between some sites, while avoiding the expense of connecting to every site.
how does Partial Mesh Topology work?
it works by considering the network traffic patterns to effectively provide optimal routes.
