Network Geography Flashcards
Personal Area Network (PAN)
Smallest type of wired or wireless network which usually covers a distance about 10 feet or less.
Example: Bluetooth and USB connections
Local Area Network (LAN)
Connects components in a limited distance, generally up to about 100 meters or 300 feet.
Example, a network at a small office
What kind of connections can networks consist of and what are the standards used with each?
Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 standard)
Ethernet (IEEE 802.3 standard)
Campus Area Network (CAN)
a building-centric LAN that is spread across numerous buildings in a certain area.
Example: Places that will typically have CANs are College Campuses, Business Parks, and Military Bases.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
Connects locations that are scattered across the entire city. Can connect to an area of about 25 miles
Wide Area Network (WAN)
connects geographically disparate internal networks
Example: the Internet, but not all WANs are public like the Internet
