Network Components Flashcards
What are the different kinds of components utilized?
Clients, servers, hubs, switches, wireless access points (WAPSs/APs), routers, firewalls, load balancers, proxy, Intrusion Detection Systems, Intrusion Prevention Systems, controllers, network attached storage (NAS) devices, storage area networks (SANs), media, wide area network (WAN) links
Clients
Devices that users access the network with, tablets, laptops, etc.
Servers
Provide resources to the network, email servers, file servers, etc
Hubs
older network devices that connect other devices like clients and servers over a LAN.
Are hubs relevant anymore
Not really, hubs have developed into bridges and then bridges developed into switches
Switches
Used to connect network devices and only forward traffic to one port to the intended destination port.
Wireless Access Points (WAPs/APs)
Allow wireless devices to connect to a wired network, used to broadcast data over a radio frequency wave rather than a cable
Routers
Used to connect different networks together
Firewalls
Security barriers between internal networks and the external world (usually the internet)
What do Firewalls do?
Monitor incoming and outgoing traffic based on predetermined security rules on an access control list.
Load Balancers
Devices or software that distribute network or application traffic across multiple servers to increase efficiency, capacity, and reliability of servers.
Proxy
Acts as an intermediary between a users device and the internet
What functions do Proxy’s provide?
Web filtering, shared network connections, and data caching to improve overall performance.
Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS)
Detect unauthorized access or anomalies and alert administrators.
Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS)
Not only detect threats, but also take action to prevent intrusion.
