What does NIC stand for and what does it do?
Network interface card
Provides connectivity, specific to the network type
What do repeaters do?
They receive a signal regenerate it and resends it out another interface.
What does a hub do?
A hub is basically a multi port repeater can only manage traffic one way receiving or sending not efficient on networks that have high speeds
what does a bridge do?
A bridge connects hubs together and they allow you to switch between different topologies e.g. Ethernet to WAN to wireless
What do switches do?
Switches are modern/upgraded version of bridges.
What is the difference between a unmanaged switch and a managed switch?
Unmanaged switch are simple and easy to setup whereas managed switch takes abit more time to setup
What do routers do?
Routes traffic between IP subnets makes decisions based on IP address
What does WAP stand for ?
Wireless access point
What does a wireless LAN controller do?
Allows the user to manage multiple WAPs from one location could also include cloud management which means you can manage anywhere
What do firewalls do?
Filter traffic on OSI layer 4 can also encrypt data going in or out of the network
What are cable modems used for?
For corporate or home use provide connectivity over broadband sends data over cable using DOCSIS
What does DSL and ADSL stand for?
Digital subscriber line and asymmetric digital subscriber line.
