Network Concepts Flashcards
What can we share on networks? 3 things.
Files, applications, resources
Name the three types of network (by geography).
LAN - Local Area Network
MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
WAN - Wide Area Network
Up to what distance can a LAN cover?
Less than 1 mile (1.5 km).
What distance can a MAN cover?
1 mile (1.5 km) to 93 miles (150 km)
Relationship between MANs and LANs?
MAN interconnects several LANs by bridging with backbone lines.
LANs thus function as single identifiable network (MAN).
Connects several LANs to WAN.
What is a network?
2+ computers connected by a medium (copper wire, air…)
Who operates a MAN?
Typically a single network operator (service provider or carrier)
What distance can a WAN cover?
Usually greater than 93 miles (150 km)
Name 3 mediums that can connect a WAN.
telephone lines, fiber-optic cables, satellite links
What are WAN pros for a company?
Pro: eliminate constraints of distance and time
What are WAN cons for a company?
Con: more expensive technologies are needed, such as SONET, Frame Relay, ATM
Are WANs found over private networks or the Internet?
Both!
Is the Internet a WAN? How about VPNs?
Yes, possibly the largest WAN; yes they can be.
