Learn the meanings of common acronyms
ASIC
Application-specific integrated circuit - Bridging hardware in routers
BNC
unknown - Connector used on 10BASE2 (mostly obsolete)
CSMA/CD
Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection - Carrier Sense means hosts listen for no “talk” before transmitting. For collisions, both hosts generate random number, then wait that long before resending
FCS
Frame Check Sequence - Used in Ethernet frames (for error checking?)
GBIC
?? - Device to customize switches to add one port to connect to a higher speed network
HTTP
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
ISO
Internation Standards Organization ?
LAN
Local Area Network - Spans a particular geographic location such as an office building, a single department in a corporate office, or even a home office
MAC Address
Media Access Control address - Unique 48-bit identifier for NICs and other hardware. 1st part is vendor-specific number
MPLS
Multiprotocol Label Switching - Protocol to prioritize data transmittions based on an assigned numeric lable put on by Router
MSAU
Multi Station Access Unit - IBM device required for Token Ring. Hosts all connected to it, forming a robust LAN. Predecessor to the hub
NIC
Network Interface Card - Connects the PC to the network. Can be Layer 1 or Layer 2
OSI Model
Open Standards Interface
POE
Power Over Ethernet - Provides electric power to devices through the data cable
STP
Spanning Tree Protocol - Protocol switches use to recognize and stop bridge loops but turning off ports
