What is a ring network?
All networked computers connected are together in a circle
Advantage of ring network
Fast because all network travels on way down the cable
Disadvantage of ring network
If one cable breaks, all the computers will not work
What is a bus network?
It joins all computers to a big cable called the backbone
Advantage of bus network
Very cheap and easy to install
Disadvantage of bus network
Not suitable for large LANs because too many computers can slow down the network
What is star network?
All computers are connected directly to one big computer
Advantage of star network
If one cable breaks all the others will still work and its fast
Disadvantage of star network
Expensive to buy the hardware for it such as hubs and switches
What is an extranet?
External network which can be viewed by many different people at an organisation
What is an Intranet?
Internal network is private to one organisation
What are routers?
Allows different networks to communicate
What are switches?
Used to connect different networks together as part of a network
What are gateways?
Allow two different networks to speak to one another by translating data
What are bridges?
Join two LANs together to form one larger network
