Network Flashcards
Wired transmission media
Cable:
twisted pair
coaxial cable
fiber optic cable
Wireless transmission media
microwave, satellite, infrared
What is a twisted/wire pair
A type of wiring where two conductors of a single circuit are twisted together to improve electromagnetic compatibility.
characteristics of a twisted pair
inexpensive, susceptible to electrical interference (noise), 2 conductors twisted around each other, plastic sheath
What is a coaxial cable?
a type of copper cable specially built with a metal shield and other components to block signal interferences
Characteristics of coaxial cable
higher bandwidth, less susceptible to noise
What are fibre optics?
A network cable designed for long distance, high performance data networking. It contains strands of glass fibers inside an insulated casing
characteristics of fibre optics
less expensive, higher bandwidth, transmits using light, immune to electrical noise, thinner than human hair, very light
What is a network?
a group of computers connected to communicate and share devices
Network types
Local Area Network
Wide Area Network
Metropolitan Area Network
What is an intranet?
A private network within an organization using internet technologies to communicate and securely share information and resources
What is an extranet?
A private network using internet technologies to share parts of an organization’s internal information with certain external parties
What is the internet?
A global network of interconnected computers and computer networks
What is LAN?
Local Area Network is a network of interconnected devices limited to a small area. For example, a school or the home.
What is WAN?
Wide Area Network covers a larger area than LAN. It is not limited to a room, building or campus.
