Network Flashcards
Define network
When two or more computers or mobile devices are connected to each other we have a network
Name two networks
Local area network, global network
List advantages of network
1.Fast, efficient communication
2. Sharing of hardware
3. Sharing files
4. Centralisation of data
5. Flexible access
6. Leisure
7.Increased control and security
How does network enable communication?
Email, SMS, instant message, social network
How is hardware shared?
Equipment can be shared by users on a network
How can files be shared?
Files on a server can be accessed by learners, and teachers can retrieve learners’ files
Files can be saved in the ‘cloud’ – on a computerconnected to the internet
What do data bases ensure in centralisation?
Multiple users cannot make conflicting changes to data (while also ensuring that changes made by users are immediately available to other users)
What does using the internet remove with flexible access?
Using internet removes location-specific limit of a network
What is cloud storage used for?
Use cloud storage to save & ‘sync’ files
What are LAN parties?
‘LAN parties’ (LANing) are popular activities where people get together and play games on a network.
What is leisure?
‘streamed live’ over the internet
can be downloaded
play against others around the world
What does data centrally stored make easier?
Backups
How do you maintain the integrity of data?
Update in one location
List disadvantages of network?
- Learning curve
- Expensive to set up + maintain
- Confidential / sensitive information stolen
- Harmful software spread quickly
- network develops a problem, users might not be able to communicate or access data
Central fault in network can cause loss of data
