Network Flashcards
Internet Service Providers
A company that provides subscribers with internet access
WAN
Wide Area Network
Fiber vs. Coax (Cable) Internet
25% faster on average than cable. Fiber: many people can access the fiber network at the same time without affecting the overall performance. Fiber internet: requires fiber-optic cable. Cable internet: requires a coaxial cable.
Upload/Download Speed
Download speed: rate that digital data is transferred from the internet to your computer.
Upload Speed: rate that digital data is transferred form your computer to the internet
Public IP Meaning
IP address that can be accessed directly over the internet and is assigned to your network router by your internet service provider (ISP)
Primary Secondary
Limited function in the TCP/IP network. Places 2 logical networks (primary secondary network, primary address and secondary address in one physical network (LAN controller) and TCP/IP routing between each logical network
Low Voltage Cabling (Ethernet)
Fiber optic cable that handle Ethernet connections. Cat5 & Cat6 cables handle Ethernet connection. RG-6 that handle internet connections in addiction to cable & satellite TV
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: Client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway
LAN
Local Area Network. Series of computers linked together to form a network in a circumscribed location. Can be connected via TCP/IP Ethernet or WiFi. Typically exclusive to an organization, such as a school, office, association or church
DHCP: Function
Operations tasks are reduced: no need to manually configure each client before they can use the network. IEP addressing plan is optimized: addresses no longer being used are freed up and made available to new clients. User mobility is easily managed: administrator doesn’t need to manually reconfigure a client when its network point changes.
DHCP: Subnets
Known as a DHCP pool: A DHCP configured to hand out IP addresses on a subnet.
DHCP: Static vs. Lease
Static: IP address does not change
Dynamic Lease: IP address can be changed at any time
DNS
Domain Name System: managing and mapping between names and number
DNS servers translate requests for names into IP addresses controlling which server an end user will reach when they type a domain name into their web browser.
Requests= Queries
DNS: Internal
Internal: may provide a firewall to resolve (or forward requests) in your internal LAN
DNS: External
External DNS is the public DNS that resolves the domain request from internet.
