LAN
Local Area Network
Usually small area (like an office)
WAN
Wide Area Network
Covers a large geographical area
Formed by many LANs or WANs
Internet is referred as largest WAN
Client-Server network
Network with server and some clients
Server
A computer that “Serve” clients, i.e. allows certain service provided, e.g. Web server serves web site contents
Client
Computer that request service from server
Peer-to-peer network
Network without central server to manage
Computers communicate to other computers directly
e.g. share file in whatsapp require whatsapp server, while airdrop is peer-to-peer
VPN
Virtual Private Network
Allow user to access a restricted network (usually LAN) from outside of that network
Intranet
Privately owned network that uses same technology as Internet.
Intranet is different from LAN, LAN is more about how computer physically connected while Intranet is the application on top of it
Internet is open and public
Extranet
Similar to Intranet, but allow access to certain allowed parties outside the company.
e.g. a company can have extranet allows their client to access
Internet
Public global network of computers
WWW
World Wide Web
An application of Internet
Involves web browser to access formatted documents (HTML) with hyperlink that join information together
Mobile Networks
Network that connects mobile phones to network provider, e.g. 4G/5G
It may provide voice/video/data transmission
Cell
The geographical area covered by a radio transmitter
Usually a few hundred meters in diameter
IM
Instant messaging
VoIP
Voice Over Internet Protocol
i.e. voice communication service using Internet, e.g. messenger voice call
Note: Traditional 4G did not treat voice call as mobile data, that’s why your 4G plan separate voice call and data quota
