Nervous System Vocabulary Flashcards
(Electrical change/charge) the result of a very rapid rise and fall in voltage across a cellular membrane
Action Potential
(Nervous system that controls organs) complex set of neurons that mediate internal homeostasis without conscious intervention or voluntary control
Autonomic Nervous System
(goes away from cell body) the most distal portion of a neuron’s axon and is critical for neural communication
Axon
(brain and spinal cord) responsible for integrating and coordinating the activities of the entire body
Central Nervous System
(transmits impulses to cell from other cells) short extension of nerve cell
Dendrite
(responds to a stimulation) when receiving an impulse it reacts and causes a reaction
Effector
membrane that covers brain and spinal cord
Meninges
fatty substance that covers some nerves
Myelin
Surrounds the axon of a Schwann cell
Neurilemma
chemicals that stimulate something aka chemical messengers
Neurotransmitter
(rest and digest) autonomic that rises from the brain and spinal cord
Parasympathetic Nervous System
(sensory and motor) outside the CNS
Peripheral Nervous System
Interlaced nerves and blood vessels
Plexus
(automatic/involuntary response) an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus
Reflex
nerve ending that sends a signal to the central nervous system when stimulated
Sensory Receptor
