Nervous System: Twist Drill, Burr Holes Or Trephine Flashcards
Subdural
Located between the dura mater and the arachnoid membrane of the brain
Twist Drill
Creates a hole(s) in the skull to access area below dura, intracerebral area or space within ventricles
Ventricular
Cerebral ventricle; largest and uppermost section of the brain, divided into left and right hemispheres
Burr Hole
Small holes drilled into skull to relieve pressure from accumulated fluid or blood
Trephine
Small saw used in surgery to remove a circular portion of tissue or bone
Intracranial Hemorrhage/Hematoma
Bleeding occurs inside the skull and deemed to be a life threatening condition
Epidural Hematoma
Accumulation of blood between the skull and outermost covering of the brain; High pressure bleeding
Subdural Hematoma
Collection of blood on surface of the brain
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Bleeding between the brain and arachnoid mater
Intracerebral hemorrhage
Bleeding around or within the brain
Hemorrhage
Intracranial hemorrhages or hematomas must be evacuated or drained and when required the site of the leak or rupture repaired
Abscess
Intracranial abscess or cyst may be evacuated to relieve pressure or sent to pathology to determine the type of cyst or infectious agent causing the abscess
