NERVOUS SYSTEM (SCIENCE) Flashcards
What are the two main divisions in the nervous system?
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
A type of nervous system that contains the brain and spinal cord.
Central Nervous System
A type of nervous system that contains the cranial and spinal nerves.
Peripheral Nervous System
The basic unit of communication in the
nervous system
Neurons or nerve cells
List all the parts of a neuron
- Dendrites
- Nucleus
- Soma/Cell Body
- Axon
- Myelin Sheath
- Axon Terminal
Contains nucleus, cytoplasm and organelles.
Cell Body/Soma
It receives and carries information TOWARD the cell body.
Dendrites
It carries messages AWAY
from the cell body. Long, tail-like fiber that extends from the cell body.
Axon
Covers the axon, it also speeds up the travel of the nerve impulse.
Myelin Sheath
It pass on the messages to
the dendrites of the other
neurons.
Axon Terminal
Is a small gap at the end of a
neuron that allows a signal
to pass from one neuron to
the next.
Synapse
What are the three types of neurons?
- Sensory Neurons or Afferent Neurons
- Interneurons or Connector Neurons
- Motor Neurons or Efferent Neurons
Receive initial stimuli from the sense organs where more
receptors are located.
Sensory Neurons or Afferent Neurons
Found in the brain and spinal cord and sends message to the
motor neuron
Interneurons or Connector Neurons
Receive messages from the brain and spinal cord and send it to the muscles or glands
Motor Neurons or Efferent Neurons
