Nervous System / Neurones/ Endocrine Flashcards
1
Q
Function of the nervous system
A
- Specialised network of cells act as internal communication
- To collect process and respond to environment
- To co-ordinate organs and cells
- Sub-divided into CNS and PNS
2
Q
Describe the CNS
A
- Brain and spinal cord
- Outer layer (cerebral cortex) is highly developed
- Spinal cord involved in reflex arcs and connects with PNS
3
Q
What is the PNS subdivided into
A
Autonomic NS: vital, unconscious, bodily functions such as breathing
Somatic NS: muscle movement and sensory receptors
4
Q
Describe the endocrine system
A
- Glands and hormones
- Slower but powerful effect
- Hormones made and secreted by glands into the bloodstream
- Pituitary gland is master gland
5
Q
Outline fight or flight
A
- Stressor received
- ANS changes from parasympathetic (resting) state to sympathetic
- Adrenaline released from adrenal medulla into bloodstream
- Causes fight or flight
- Reverse happens when threat has passed
6
Q
Name 3 features of sympathetic state
A
- Increases heart rate
- Increased breathing rate
- Inhibits digestion
7
Q
Structure of neurones
A
All: cell body inc nucleus
Dendrites: carry impulse for neighbouring neurones to cell body
Axon: carries away (myelinated) through saltatory conduction
8
Q
Which have long axons
A
Motor
