Nervous System (Module 10) Flashcards
Nerves
Neural “cables”
Nervous system
The body’s speedy, electrochemical communication system.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
The brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Connects the central nervous system (CNS) to the rest of the body.
Sensory Neurons (Afferent)
Carry incoming information from the sense receptors to the CNS.
Motor Neurons (Efferent)
Carry from the CNS muscles to muscles and glands.
Interneurons
Carry information between other neurons only found in the brain and spinal cord (CNS).
Reflexes
Automatic, inborn response to a sensory stimulus (spinal cord-interneurons).
Neural Networks
With experience, networks can learn, as feedback strengthens or inhibits connections that produce certain results.
Somatic Nervous System
Body’s skeletal muscles.
Autonomic Nervous System
Glands and the muscles of the internal organs.
Sympathetic Nervous System (Fight or Flight)
Arouses the body, mobilizing its energy in stressful situations.
Parasympathetic Nervous System (Rest and Digest)
Calms the body, preserving its energy.
