Nervous System-Ion Channels, RMB, AP Flashcards
Define voltage
A measure of potential difference between two points (V or mV)
Define current
Flow of electrical charge (ions) between two points
Define resistance
Hindrance to charge flow
Ohm’s law
Current (l)= voltage (V) / resistance (R)
Two main types of ion channels
- Leakage (non-gated) channels
- Gated channels
Three different types of gated ion channels
- Ligand gated (chemically-gated)
- Voltage-gated
- Mechanically-gated
Ligand-gated (chemically gated) channel
Binds to a specific chemical
Voltage-gated channel
Responds to changes in membrane potential
Mechanically gated channels
Responds to physical deformation of sensory receptors
Where are ions diffused when gated channels are open?
Along an electrochemical gradient
How are ions diffused in chemical concentration gradients?
From higher concentration to lower concentration
How are ions diffused in electrical gradient?
Toward opposite electrical charge
What are the two factors that influence resting membrane potential?
- Differences in ionic composition across membrane
- Differences in plasma membrane permeability
