What are hormones?
Chemical messages sent in the blood to activate target cells
Where is FSH produced?
Pituitary glands
What does FSH do?
Causes the egg to mature and stimulates the ovaries to produce oestrogen
Where is oestrogen produced?
Ovaires
What does oestrogen do?
Causes the pituitary gland to produce LH and inhabits further FSH
Where is LH produced?
Pituitary gland
What does LH do?
Stimulates the release of an egg
What happens at stage 1 of the menstrual cycle?
bleeding starts
What happens at stage 2 of the menstrual cycle?
The lining of the uterus builds up again
What happens at stage 3 of the menstrual cycle?
An egg is released
What happens at stage 4 of the menstrual cycle?
The wall is then maintained and if no fertilised egg has landed the lining will break down and start the cycle again.
