Nervous System Histology Flashcards
What is the arrow pointing to?
An Axon.
Define neuron.
The information carrying cells in the nervous system.
Fill in the blanks
Define dendrites. Also define specific dendrites that are apart of Afferent neurons.
Dendrites: receive inputs(synapses) from other cells.
Afferent neurons: neurons that sense touch, temperature, and pain of skin.
They have sensory dendrites.
Define the characteristics of the neuronal cell body. What other name does it go by?
Also called soma.
It’s large
Engaged in lots of protien synthesis.
Lots of rough ER
Prominent nucleolus.
Define nucleolus.
The organelle inside the nucleus where ribosomal RNA is made.
Define grey matter.
The region containing neuronal cell bodies.
Define white matter.
The outer pale-staining tissue containing bundles of axons.
What are you looking at?
Somatic motor neurons of the spinal cord. (Whole spine)
What should you notice in this picture?
Look at nucleus size comparison!
Define what is the rough ER, the nucleus, and the nucleolus.
Define characteristics of axons.
Conducts action potentials
Can be up to a meter long
Contains microtubules for axonal transport
May be myelinated or unmyelinated.
Define characteristics of myelin.
Speeds conduction of action potentials
Nodes of Ranvier are spaces between myelin bundles.
Where are glial cells found? And what do they do?
They are found in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.
They make myelin.
What do oligodendrocytes do?
Produce myelin in central nervous system.
They extend multiple processes and can myelinate multiple axons .
