nervous system/ endocrine system test 3 Flashcards
The two organs that coordinate all activities to maintain homeostasis
Nervous and endocrine system
Three major functions of the nervous system
- Monitor internal and external environments 2. Integrates sensory information 3. Coordinates voluntary and involuntary responses
Central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
PNS afferent division
receptors bring info to central nervous system
PNS efferent autonomic
controls smooth and cardiac muscle and glands
Neurons
basic functional unit of the nervous system
axon
carries signals away from the cell body
motor neurons
carry message away from CNS to effectors
visceral receptors
monitor activities of internal organs and provide sensations of distention, deep pressure and pain
microglia
essential protective functions such as engulfing pathogens and cellular waste
schwann cells
cover every axon in PNS
extracellular fluid
is high in Na+ and Cl-
intracellular fluid
is high in K+ and negatively charged protein
resting membrane potential
-70 mV
threshold
level of depolarization initiates an action potential
