arteriography
catheter is inserted into artery and then up to the carotid artery in the neck
checks for stroke
glasgow coma scale
test their level on consciences
computerized axial tomography (CT or CAT scan)
series of x rays of the layers on the brain, makes a three dimensional picture
identifies tumors, bleed, blood clots, disease, and edema
electroencephalography (EEG)
measures the brain electrical signals
can detect sleep disorders, head injury, tumor, or stroke
can check irregular delta waves
electromyography (EMG)
uses electrical stimulation passed through small needles inserted into the muscle to demonstrate the electrical activity of peripheral muscles
can diagnose disorders such as diabetic neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome
Genetic Testing
finds if patient is carrying genes that cause a disorder
an example is spinal bifida while child is in mothers womb
Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
done to collect amount of csf
ask if they are on medication or herbal products that may increase risk of bleeding
what is the aftercare/ post op after the lumbar puncture
after procedure, patient needs to lie down for an hour and drink plenty of fluids
patient should not drive home
doctor needs to check the insertion site
magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
uses powerful magnets to generate images of the brain and spine
patients with metal implants or pacemakers can not do MRI will result in death if they do
