Nervous system anatomy Flashcards
How does the BBB maintain a stable environment for the brain?
Endothelium = tight jx
Thick Basal Lamina
Foot Processes called podocytes
How do water soluble molecules enter the BBB?
via pumps i.e Glu, aa and H20
Where do Motor fibres ?
AT the medula
Where do sensory fibres cross?
in the spinal cord
Define Pyramidal tract
Aggregation of upper motor nerve fibres that travel from the cerebral cortex and terminate in either the brainstem (corticobulbar) or Spinal cord (corticospinal)
Define Peduncles (ety: foot)
the part that connects cerebellum to the brain stem.
Define Red Nucleus
The red nucleus or nucleus ruber is a structure in the rostral midbrain next to substantia nigra involved in motor coordination.
Define Substantia nigra (ety: Black substance)
located in the mesencephalon (midbrain) that plays an important role in reward and movement
Black as high levels of dopamine
Define Colliculi (ety: mound)
Paired structure in the posterior portion of the midbrain
Superior Colliculi - Allows ability to direct behaviour to visual objects
Inferior Colliculi - principal midbrain nucleus of the auditory pathway
Define Inferior olivary nucleus
involved in motor control
It is a major source of input to the cerebellum
The hypoglossal nucleus sends its fibers ventrally between the pyramid and inferior olivary nucleus to exit as the hypoglossal nerve.
Define Reticular formation
a set of interconnected nuclei that are located throughout the brainstem
Governing some of the basic functions of higher organisms
What is the function of the lateral nucleii in the thalamus?
Process sensory information
What is the brief fx of the hypothalamus?
Visceral control central and maintains homeostasis
What is the function of the superior peduncle?
Sends the blueprint information from the cerebellum through the brainstem to the cerebrum
What is the fx of the inferior peduncle?
Carries vestibular and proprioceptive information from the spinal cord through the medulla to the cerebellum
