Nervous System Flashcards
What does the central nervous system (CNS) consist of
Brain and spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system
Nerve cells that carry information to or from the central nervous system
What are nerve cells also called
Neurones
How are neurones adapted to carry electrical impulses from one place to another
- long fibre (axon) which is insulated by fatty sheath
- tiny branches (dendrons) which have dendrites at each and allowing them to branch further
Name some different senses organs
Skin, tongue nose eye ear
What do receptors do
Detect change in the environment (stimulus) and produce electrical impulses in response
What are effectors
Parts of the body such as muscle and glands that produce a response to a detected stimulus (e.g. a miracle contracting or gland releasing a hormone into the blood)
Receptor detects stimulus which then goes to the sensory neurones which then goes where
Relay neurone
Where does the relay neurone then send it
Motor neurone
What is the order of neurones in the reflex action
Sensory then relay then motor (SRM)
What is the last stage in the reflex action
Response
What is there in between two neurones
A tiny gap called a synapse
How does information cross this gap
Neurone releases neurotransmitters into the synapse
