Nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
Central NS
A
- receives info from the peripheral NS
- processes then responds
- comprised of the brain and spinal cord
2
Q
Peripheral NS
A
- everything outside of the CNS muscles, organs, glands
- carries and conveys info to and from the CNS
- comprised of the somatic NS and Autonomic NS
3
Q
Somatic NS
A
- division in the peripheral NS
- controls all voluntary movement and responses
- conscious awareness
- network of neurons that transmits info from receptor sites on the sensory organs to the CNS and carries info from the CNS to the muscles that control movement
4
Q
Autonomic NS
A
- division in the peripheral NS
- controls involuntary movement
- unconscious awareness
- network of neurons that carries neural messages between the CNS and organs and glands
- regulates functioning of internal organs and glands automatically
- system is about survival and maintaining regulating of the body
- comprised of the sympathetic and parasympathetic NS
5
Q
Sympathetic NS
A
- division in the autonomic NS
- activates the FFF response
- controls organs in times of stress, during vigorous activity or in a threatening situation
6
Q
Parasympathetic NS
A
- division in the autonomic NS
- controls organs when the body is at rest
- keeps the body functioning effectively
- counterbalances the sympathetic NS by returning the body back to a state of calm when the stress is no longer present
- maintains homeostasis in times of low stress
