Nervous System Flashcards
Give 4 differences between motor neurones and sensory neurones?
Motor Neurones have:
- Long axon
- No receptor
- Has dendrites
- Many short dendrons
What is a dermatome?
an area of skin that is supplied by a single spinal nerve
What is a myotome?
Group of muscles innervated by a single spinal nerve
What is a NMJ?
Chemical synapse between a motor neurone and a muscle fibre
What are biomarkers?
naturally occurring molecules, genes or characteristics by which a particular disease can be identified
What is a biomarker of spina bifida in the CSF?
Increase in CSF proteins
What is spina bifida?
Neural tube disorder that causes the incomplete closing of backbone and membranes around spinal cord
What 2 compounds can be taken to treat/prevent spina bifida?
Folic acid and Inositol
What is hydrocephalus?
accumulation of CSF in the brain causing increased cranial pressure
Give 3 causes of hydrocephalus?
spina bifida
meningitis
brain tumour
define odds ratio:
Quantifies the strength of association between 2 events
define relative risk?
ratio of the probability of an event occurring in the exposed group versus the probability of the event occurring in the non-exposed group
define confidence interval?
a range of values so defined that there is a specified probability that the true value lies within it
What regions are the spine organised into?
Cevrical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Saccrum + Coccyx
what adrenergic receptor is present on the heart, and what pathway is it?
B1, G-alpha-S
