nervous system Flashcards
what is the nervous system
a complex network of nerve cells
carries messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to different parts of the body
the brain controls the nervous system
the brain
the centre of all conscious awareness
brains outer layer is highly developed
the brains outer layer is called
cerebral cortex
the central nervous system (CNS) is made up of
spinal cord and brain
the spinal cords
an extension of the brain
responsible for reflex actions
connects nerves to peripheral nervous system
the peripheral nervous system (PNS) is made up of
autonomic NS and somatic NS
autonomic NS is made up of
sympathetic NS and parasympathetic NS
the PNS job is
transmit messages via neurones (nerve cells) to and from the CNS
the somatic NS job is
transmit info received by sense through receptors to the CNS
the autonomic NS job is
to control basic involuntary functions e.g. breathing
made up of sympathetic and parasympathetic NS
