Nervous system Flashcards
What is a stimulus?
a change in environment- heat, pain
What does a receptor do?
detects the change
What does the effector do?
muscle/gland contract
What is a response?
what you see- reaction
Nerve definition
consist of bundles of nerve cells called neurones
What do motor neurones do?
carry impulses from CNS to effectors
What do relay neurones do?
connect sensory and motor neurones
what is a nerve impulse?
a wave of electrical activity that travels down the neurone at 100m/s
what does a Dendrite do?
allows many connections to relay neurones
Nucleus’ job?
- contains DNA
- controls cell activities
what does the Axon do?
is long to carry electrical impulses from one part if the body to another
what does the Fatty sheath do?
- for insulation
- increases speed of electrical impulses
how does the reflex arc protect the body?
an automatic and rapid response to potential danger
what does the endplate do?
connects muscle to gland
cell membrane job?
controls what enters and leaves the cell
